If you run marketing at a Cleveland-area company, someone has probably asked you the question: can't you just build the new site yourself in WordPress? Maybe you can. Maybe you shouldn't. After 20 years building websites for Northeast Ohio businesses, here is an honest way to decide, even though we are one of the people you might hire.

When your marketing team can (and should) do it in-house

  • The site is simple: a handful of pages, no integrations, no online store.
  • Someone on the team genuinely enjoys it and has the hours (it always takes longer than expected).
  • Budget is tight and the website is not yet your main source of leads.
  • You are comfortable with a clean template look.

We will say it plainly: for a small brochure site, a capable marketing person with WordPress or Squarespace can absolutely get you online. Not every project needs a pro.

When you should bring in a developer or studio

  • The site is a real lead source and needs to rank. Technical SEO, page speed and Core Web Vitals are where plugin-heavy template stacks quietly fight you.
  • You need integrations: CRM, ERP, online booking, e-commerce, gated content, or forms that route to sales.
  • You are redesigning or migrating and cannot afford to lose your rankings.
  • Accessibility, security and reliability actually matter, and they matter more than most teams think.
  • Your marketer's time is worth more spent on campaigns than fighting a page builder.

The tell: if the project would eat weeks of your best marketer's time, the "free" in-house build is quietly the most expensive option on the table.

The hidden costs of the in-house build

  • Your marketer's hours. The afternoon project becomes a full quarter.
  • A plugin-and-theme stack that is slow, less secure, and breaks on updates.
  • A site that looks like the template, because there was never time to make it not.
  • The rebuild in 18 months when you have outgrown it.

The hybrid that usually wins

For most mid-size companies the best answer is not either-or. A pro builds the site correctly, fast, custom, and SEO-sound, on a content management system your team can edit, and your marketing person owns the day-to-day: pricing, photos, blog posts, events, without touching code. That is how we work. Hand-coded where it matters, an editable CMS where you need control, and one accountable person to call when something breaks. You keep the strategic work; we handle the build and the plumbing.
