Search behavior is changing in a way most small businesses have not noticed yet. Instead of typing "dentist Beachwood" into Google and scrolling, more people now open ChatGPT and ask a full question: "Who is a good family dentist near Shaker Heights that takes my insurance?" or "Can you recommend a roofer in Parma who does free estimates?"
The assistant does not show ten blue links. It names a few businesses and explains why. If you are one of them, you get a warm, pre-sold inquiry. If you are not, you are invisible to that person.
This is not theoretical for us. Our most recent new-client inquiries arrived straight from ChatGPT, from Cleveland-area owners who asked an AI assistant for a recommendation and were pointed to our site. So here is what we have learned about how it works, and what you can do about it.
How AI assistants find local businesses
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI for a local recommendation, the assistant usually searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer from what it found. Perplexity shows those sources openly. ChatGPT often visits your site directly while it answers, and we can see it doing so in our own server logs.
That means the assistant is doing roughly what a careful person would do: looking for clear, consistent, trustworthy information about who you are, what you do, and where. The businesses that get recommended are the ones that make that information easy to find and easy to believe.
What makes a business easy for AI to recommend
1. Say plainly who you are, what you do, and where
Your homepage should state, in ordinary words, the kind of business you are, the services you offer, the communities you serve, and how to reach you. Not "comfort you can count on," but "residential heating and air conditioning repair in Mayfield Heights, serving Lyndhurst, Highland Heights and Richmond Heights." AI assistants quote clear sentences. They cannot quote a slogan.
2. Answer the questions people actually ask
People ask assistants specific questions: Do you take my insurance? Are you accepting new patients? What does it cost? Are you open on Saturdays? A frequently asked questions section that answers these plainly is one of the most useful things you can add to your site, both for people and for the AI tools reading on their behalf.
3. Keep your facts consistent everywhere
If your website says you close at 5 and your Google Business Profile says 6, or one page quotes a price that another page contradicts, an assistant has a reason to doubt you. Make sure your name, address, phone number, hours, and key facts match across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, and the directories you appear in.
4. Build your Google Business Profile and your reviews
Reviews and a complete Google Business Profile are among the strongest signals that a business is real, active, and well regarded. They help in local 'near me' search, and they give AI assistants the evidence they need to recommend you with confidence.
5. Be mentioned somewhere other than your own site
Assistants trust what other people say about you more than what you say about yourself. Local news coverage, chamber of commerce listings, partner organizations, professional associations, and community event pages all count. A single mention in a trusted local source can matter more than another page on your own site.
6. Make sure your site can actually be read
Important information should be real text, not baked into images. Your site should load quickly and work on a phone. And it is worth checking that your site's settings are not accidentally blocking the search crawlers these assistants rely on. It is an easy mistake to make, and an easy one to fix.
How to tell whether it is working
When ChatGPT sends someone to your website, the link often carries a small tag that says chatgpt.com. If you use Google Analytics, look for visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your traffic sources. And ask every new customer how they found you. You may be surprised how often the answer is "I asked ChatGPT."
An honest word about guarantees
Nobody can guarantee that an AI assistant will recommend you, any more than anyone can honestly guarantee the top spot on Google. Anyone who promises either should make you nervous. What you can do is make your business the clearest, most consistent, best-documented option in your area. That is what assistants and search engines both reward, and it is the core of our search engine optimization work for Cleveland businesses.
